Kagitingan ng Bayan

Araw ng Kagitingan is a non-working holiday that is part of a long weekend in the Philippines. World War II veterans parade in different cities in the Philippines on this day. There are small parades in different localities in the Philippines but the Araw ng Kagitingan’s main highlight occurs when the country’s president gives a speech at the Mt Samat shrine, in the Bataan province, to commemorate the heroism of the Filipinos and American troops during the World War II.

Kagitingan is a regular holiday in the Philippines and occurs on or around April 9. Many streets are closed and public transport routes may be redirected to give way for parades. Malls and other leisure areas remain open and most people may go to these places and use this day as a family day.

Is The Day of Valor a Public Holiday?
The Day of Valor is a public holiday. It is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed.

In 2022, it falls on a Saturday, and some businesses may choose to follow Saturday opening hours.

The Day of Valor, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, commemorates the heroism of Filipinos and American Soldiers when the Japanese occupied the Philippines during World War II. Major General Edward P. King, of the United States Army, was forced to surrender more than 76,000 Filipinos, Chinese and American soldiers to the Japanese at dawn on April 9, 1942. The soldiers were forced to take a 90-mile (about 145 kilometers) hike to Camp O’Donnell in San Fernando. Thousands of prisoners died during the hike (also known as the Bataan Death March) due to starvation, dehydration and diseases before they could reach the camp.

Despite the trials of defeat, the captured soldiers stood strong and heroes emerged from the event. The surrender of Bataan hastened the fall of Corregidor. However, without this stand, the Japanese might have quickly overrun all of the US bases in the Pacific. Bataan forced them to slow down, giving the allies valuable time to prepare for conflicts such as the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway, which followed closely thereafter. American and Filipino liberation forces eventually retook the Bataan peninsula on February 8, 1945.

The Day of Valor was a national observance until a Letter of Instruction No. 1087, dated on November 26, 1980, made “Araw ng Kagitingan” a national public holiday to honor the people who helped bring democracy and freedom in the Philippines during the World War II era. Executive Order No. 203, dated on June 30, 1987, further proclaimed April 9 as “Araw Ng Kagitingan” to pay tribute to the heroes of Bataan, Corregidor and Bessang.

Lenten Season Amidst the Pandemic

As social distancing, home quarantine, and cancellation of mass gatherings have become a must in the past couple of weeks, Catholics around the world have been experiencing an unusual observance of the Lenten season. With the churches resorting to social and mass media, the question of how this affects one's faith-life cannot be ignored.

During Lenten Season, Catholics enter into a period of fasting, almsgiving, and praying in preparation for the Holy Week where Christ's passion, death, and resurrection are remembered and celebrated. Easter Sunday—besides its grandiose traditional activities and elaborate liturgy—is the most important feast day in the Christian calendar, celebrated by Roman Catholics as well as other Christian denominations. It is a season of reflecting on one's own beliefs, morals, and piety. It strengthens each and every Christian's conviction that Christ is alive. However, 2020 has been a crazy year since its first days and topping the list is the COVID-19 pandemic that has put the world at a standstill.

The covid-19 may have halt us but we can still do something about and that we can still do what we are about to do. We just need to be safe and follow the rules and regulations so that everyone will be the same as always.

Woman's Right

The 2021 National Women’s Month Celebration serves as a tribute, a platform, and a call to action that highlights the extraordinary roles of ordinary Juanas in the society as trailblazers and harbingers of change. This celebration is also a venue to discuss and address the issues that women continue to face so empowerment can be fully achieved. The campaign is also a call for concrete, sustainable, and inclusive actions towards gender equality.

This observation traces its roots in different movements in the 1900s, particularly in the United States of America, particularly garment workers fighting for their economic rights and fair work hours.

In 1911, the first International Women’s Day was celebrated on 19 March participated by millions of men and women. However, a tragic incident led to the changing of this date. On 25 March, 1911, 140 working women died in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in New York City. This brought to light the unfair labor practices and inhumane working conditions that women workers face and led to several rallies.

Celebrating the National Women's Month is really good especially for women for they also want to be treated like a normal human being and not as someone who is a burden in other people's live. We must respect each other so that no one will look down over the other.

Struggle In The Past

Second Quarter was a blast. It may not lasted that long but the things that happened was surely buried deep within our minds for lot's of incredibly amazing things happened during it.

During the second quarter I learned how to use notepad little by little by following the guides made by our teacher carefully so that I won't mess up and waste everything I've done up until now.

I also discovered that despite having a hard time sometimes, it really is relieving when you accomplished correctly the tasks that has been given.

There are lots of problems and challenges mostly in the beginning for I don't know about a thing about the processes and the editing app itself. Of course I didn't let that stop me. I trialed and error most things to get them right and I also ask someone's help if ever I needed anything.

Moving on, I will continue doing what I can do for it is what matters right now. If ever there shall be things that gets in my way again, I'll do the best of my ability to surpass my limits right here, right now.

What Valentine's About

What is Valentine's Day? St Valentine's Day is an annual festival to celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration. Every year on 14 February people celebrate this day by sending messages of love and affection to partners, family and friends. Couples send Valentine's Day cards and flowers and spend special time together to honour their love for each other.

Valentine's Day is named after Saint Valentine, a Catholic priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd Century. There are many stories about St Valentine and over time these stories grew into the legend we know today.

It wasn't until more than 200 years later that 14 February was proclaimed St Valentine's Day. By this time Rome had become Christian and the Catholic Church was determined to stamp out any remaining paganism. A pagan fertility ritual was held in February each year and the Pope abolished this festival and proclaimed 14 February Saint Valentine's Day, thus establishing this feast day on the Catholic Calendar of Saints.

While Valentine's Day is celebrated in most countries, different cultures have developed their own traditions for this festival. In some parts of the world Valentine's Day is observed as a day for expressing love between family members and friends, rather than that of romantic couples. Some traditions include leaving lollies and gifts for children and others include acts of appreciation between friends.

Some say that Valentine's Day are for couples only, but the thing is that Valentine's isn't only limited between couples only. You may celebrate it with your friends, relatives, and family for it's love that matters.

Kannawidan Festival: What It's Used To Be

Ilocos Sur is a beautiful province located in the northern part of Luzon. It is a province rich in culture that represents the ancient Spanish and Filipino heritage. To show and share their treasures to the whole world, the locals conceived a festival that highlights these cultural traditions and they called it the “Kannadiwan Festival”.

It is a celebration that lasts from the last week of January up to the first week of February. Included in the course of events is the commemoration of the foundation day of the province.

On the opening day, there is usually a mass held at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral. It is followed by a procession of the Patron Saints of the 40 parishes and images of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary around the city. It is the Ilocanos' way of giving thanks to the Almighty not only for the bountiful blessings but also for the rich heritage of the city, including the close family ties among the Ilocanos. This event showcases the deep-rooted religiosity of the townsfolk.

However, this year's Kannawidan Festival won't be the same as it's used to be. People around the Philippines especially Ilocos Sur come to watch and witness the parades that a lot of people watches near it and the concerts that makes you jump non-stop. They buy lots of food from various food stalls and stores around the area. Visits galleries and exhibitions that catches their eyes. Buys accessories to give to their friends, love ones and also for their selves. Then goes to the carnival to make their souls jump outta their body.

It really was fun and all not until the covid-19 disease spread like crazy. Making us at risk if ever we want to go there so bad. Now, all those precious memories are all in the past. We understand that the government is protecting us. It's just that there won't be big things to look forward to every mid January now, but let's just hope and pray that things will be normal soon for us to live our lives to the fullest.

The city has a longganisa-themed march and at one time endeavored to set a record for having the longest longganisa at any point made. The celebration has turned into a group cabinet as Vigan longganisa, a local rendition of Mexican salami, has an unmistakable garlicky taste that has turned into a most loved of the Filipino sense of taste.

Despite the fact that different makers have attempted to duplicate the Vigan longganisa taste, they have not been fruitful. Biguenos ascribe this to the way that the making of Vigan longganisa is a centuries-old convention of the nearby producers and all if not the majority of the fixings utilized as a part of making the local hotdog is sourced from Vigan. Vigan's garlic and sugarcane vinegar are said to be all the more unequivocally delightful. It's an extraordinary bring home blessing in the wake of sharing in a Vigan City Fiesta.

The Festival, which will be held until Jan. 27, corresponds with the commemoration festivity of Vigan's cityhood and its yearly celebration out of appreciation for St. Paul. The road moving rivalry will include 13 taking part groups from the distinctive regions in Ilocos Region and each group will contend in three classes. The groups, made out of secondary school and understudies, will sensationalize the way toward making longaniza.

However, covid-19 pandemic brings a lot of bad things that we have to follow the safety protocols and stay at home. A lot of people can't really enjoy the festival for it is really dangerous to form crowds that will spread the virus but the festival will still proceed. We may not be as excited as before but still we must know our limits.
